楼上的，我觉得不需用过去时啦，这句话是表示一种常有的事。有些事自己不能控制，再怎么努力也是徒劳。

It means unexpected when out of control.
The life is just a cake of chocolate. You cannt control everything. You just can be your best. Do whatever you can do and try your best. Thus, you could say to yourself that you have finished your mission.
