Shanghai is located in east of China.

the在此有强调China的意思
in the east of 就是 ：在中国本身的东部；
in east of 则是：在中国外面的东部（以中国为参考）

in the east of 在中国里面的东部,in east of 在中国外面的东部，所以第一句话是正确的。这个语法初中就学过的。如果不想分裂中国就用第一种用法。

"in the east of"是指“在...的东部”,但是指在内部的东部;
而"in east of"也是指“在...的东部”,但是指在外部的东部,意思就是不是参照物的一部分

我跟楼上各位的观点都有偏差
正确的说法是：Shanghai is located in the east of China.
注意：类似句子中定冠词the从来不省略
但是后一句的意思并不像楼上各位所说是外部的意思
表示位置关系时：
1.in表示在统一范围内
2.on表示在相邻范围外
3.to才表示相邻或不相邻的范围外，不属于中国，如：
Japan lies to the east of China.
