There is a television commercial that really annoys me. It begins with a man describing his beautiful home and nice car, but he admits that in order to have those things, he’s gotten in debt “up to his eyeballs.”
The premise is a common one: a family owns a good life through credit cards. It’s the advertisement’s conclusion that disturbs me, because it recommends consolidating debt to lower monthly payments. I suppose I can’t blame the lender that created the ad. However, I do have a problem with the premise that lowering monthly payments is a sound way. It appears the government is becoming concerned as well.
Pressure from the government has also led some of the major credit – card issuers to increase their minimum monthly payment requirements from around 2 percent per month to 4 percent. I welcome this move.
If you have a credit – card balance (余欠之款额) of $ 10,000 and make only the 2 percent minimum payment each month, your balance will not be paid off for about 58 years and you would have paid nearly $ 29,000 in interest. At a 4 percent monthly payment rate, your balance would be paid off in 15 years, and your interest expense would be a bit under $ 6,000.
For years, we have been encouraged to buy now, pay later. College students are given credit cards with credit limits too attractive to pass up. The availability of easy credit and very low repayment requirements has helped to create a generation of people who have been encouraged to buy whatever we want without having to save or wait for it. The result is a society with heavy debt.
If I could redesign that TV ad, I’d have an announcer talk about the problem with debt consolidation that is likely to happen, although it would not.
