The Sun and the Wind
High up above in the sky the Wind was arguing with the Sun about which one of them was stronger.
"I am more powerful than you," boasted the Wind. "Think of all the things I can do…I can cause trees to fall and chimneys to topple; I can blow up waves that drown boats at sea; I can drive whole storm clouds across the sky!"
"I cannot do any of that, it is true, and yet I am stronger than you," replied the Sun.
They argued this question back and forth a quite a while. Suddenly, Sun noticed that far below them on a winding road through the countryside a lone traveller was walking.
"Do you see that traveller down there?" Asked Sun. "Let us see which one of us can get the cloak from off his back."
The Wind though that would be easy. He blew hard and tried to whip away the cloak from the traveller's shoulders, but the traveller walked along the road pulling his cloak tighter. The Wind blew much harder and traveller pulled his cloak tighter still. No matter how hard the Wind blew (and he blew up quite a gale) he could not get the traveller to take off his cloak.
Soon, exhausted, the Wind gave up.
The Sun smiled: "My turn now."
He shone warmly and after a while the traveller began to perspire. The Sun kept on shining and the traveller undid the cloak from around his neck. Still the Sun shone, getting warmer and warmer, until at last the traveller became so hot that he removed his cloak.
"See?" said the Sun. "One does not have to be rough to be strong, one can be gentle and persistent and still achieve results."
