对于人际交往中礼貌系统和策略的研究业已成为语用学与社会语言学的热点问题之一。本文在西方学者Browm&Levinson(1978，1987)有关Negative Face(通常翻译为消极面子)和Positvie Face(通常翻译为积极面子)研究成果的基础上，对中国文化中的脸和面子二者之间的区别、量化关系、个人脸值与社交脸值、个人面子与社交面子的现象进行了研究和探讨，并对中国人所说的脸／面子与Brown＆Levinson所研究的Face内涵进行了比较，指出了二者的差异和通行译文的不正确处，提供汉语中“Positive Face”和“Negative Face”两词的参考译法。
