请问这两种有什么区别么？ 或者是in the past year 更好一些？

（如果今年是2009年，last year 指 2008 年）
in the past year 在过去的一年里
（如果现在是 2009 年 8 月，in the past year 指 从2008年8月到2009年7月）

他是该组织在过去一年第5个被杀的高级成员。
（即：该5人可能不只是2008年被杀，而是在前12个月里发生的）
