The World Food Program has announced that it would hang off the rations for nearly 3 millions of Sudanese now living in refugee camps after being forced to leave their homes by fighting in the western region of Darfur. The head of the WFP James Morris said it's being dumb because of a shortfall in funding. From the Sudanese capital Khartoum Jenna Fischer reports.
The head of the United Nation's World Food Program said the decision to cut rations was a last resort, and one of the hardest decision he'd ever had to make. Over 6.1 million people across the whole of Sudan need food aid, more than any other country in the world. The bill to feed them is 746 million dollars, of which less than a third has been donated. The biggest donor by far is the United States, with very little coming from European countries. The ration cut will come into force from the beginning of May, and is designed to ensure that some food lasts through to what's called the “hunger season” between July and September.
