Some of these super-skinny models wouldn't be allowed on the catwalks in Madrid or Milan. But at London Fashion Week, it's still O.K. to be a so-called "Size Zero". Critics say the ultrathin look promotes eating disorders amongst teenage girls and women. They say London Fashion Show organizers need to act. Susan Ringwood is CEO of the eating disorder charity, BEAT.

Susan Ringwood:
I think they've still got a very long way to go before they really take this issue seriously and demonstrate that they've make a commitment to lasting change.

UK fashion industry leaders say they're mindful of the concerns but refuse to ban underweight models. Instead they bar girls under 16 from the runway, and are calling for designers to use what they describe as healthy models.

Model Erin O'Conner acknowledged that there are problems with the health of some models but she feels her colleagues have been unfairly criticized.

Erin O'Conner:
I felt strongly that models were really victimized or vilified for just being. And of course to be a model, you need a certain physique, which is extraordinary. An ultimate slight (physic) figure comes of very long frame. And we need to remember that we are adhering to a designer’s aesthetic(s).

But models like Taryn Meaker who suffered from the eating disorder, bulimia, say they endured constant pressure to be ultrathin. "Healthy living." Now recovered, she works as a plus size model, though she's still 2 sizes smaller than the average British woman.

-So Taryn, do you think that the fashion industry should ban "size zero" models?

Taryn:
I think they should, because as much as there may be some girls who manage to be healthy at that level, most girls don't, and so it's dangerous for the girls who are trying desperately to be that because they need to, because they are doing their job and more than that, it's very dangerous for everybody else who's watching as woman and teenage girls and going oh that’s how I need to be because it's not, it’s not what most people can be healthy yet.

The British fashion industry is taking steps to help models improve their health, but it's critics say industry leaders are paying a lot of lip service to the issue, but they want to see more action.

Action, that they say could really start changing the popular myth that only thin is beautiful.

Some of these super skinny models wouldn't be allowed on the catwalks in Madrid or Milan. But in London Fashion Week, it's still okay to be a so called size zero. Critics say the ultra thin look promotes eating disorders amongst teenage girls and women. They say London fashion show organizers need to act. Susan Ringwood is CEO of the eating disorder charity--BEAT.

I think it's still got a very long way to go before they really take this issue seriously and demonstrate that they've made a commitment to lasting change.

UK fashion industry leaders say they are mindful of the concerns, but refuse to ban underweight models. Instead, they bared girls under 16 from the wrong way, and are calling for the designers to use what they describe as healthy models. Model Erin O'Connor acknowledged that there are problems with the health of some models, but she feels her colleagues have been unfairly critisized.

I felt strongly that models with the victimized or vilified for just being, and of course, to be a model you need certain physique which is extraordinary. An ultimate slight physic figure comes very long frame, and we need to remember that we are adhering to the designer's /.

But models like Taryn Meaker who sufferred from the eating disorder boulimia, say they endured constant pressure to be ultra thin. Now recovered, she works as a plus size model, though she's still two sizes smaller than the average British woman.

So Taryn do you think that the fashion / should ban size zero models?

I think they should, because as much as there may be some girls who manage to be health, but / most girls don't. And so it's dangerous for the girls were trying desperately to be that, because they need to, because they are doing the job. And more than that, it's very dangerous for everybody else who is watching, as woman and teenage girls, and going, oh, that's how I need to be. Because it's not, it's not where most people can be healthy yet.

The British fashion industry is taking starts to help models improve their health, but its critics say industry leaders are paying a lot of / service to the issue, but they want to see more action. Action that they say could really start changing the popular myth that only thin is beautiful.
