Thailand's being accused of turning a group of Burmese refugees into an exhibit. The fact that the women of the Kayan tribe wear brass rings around their necks to elongate them has made them quite a tourist attraction. Some of the women wanna leave, but say the Thai authorities won’t let them. From Thailand, Andrew Harding reports on this “human zoo”.

Deep in the Thai jungle, refugees from Burma, wait in crowded camps. They’ve fled conflict, but one group here stands out. For centuries, women from the Kayan tribe have wrapped brass coils around their necks with extraordinary results. Ma Po has worn hers since she was five.

“It’s quite a weight to have around your neck.”
“I’m used to it now,” she says, “but it can itch.”

Over the years her bruised shoulders have been pushed down, making her neck appear unnaturally long. Unlike other refugees, the long-neck Kayan are kept apart in special villages where tourists can pay to come and see them.

“It’s quite interesting. It’s unlike anything in Canada.”

Some of these families have been here for years. They’re at least safe, and can earn a little money. But they’re also trapped in what amounts to a “human zoo”.

Zember is desperate to escape.
“I feel like a prisoner.”

Two years ago, she was invited to resettle in New Zealand. But the Thai authorities are refusing to allow her and 19 other long-necks to leave.

“Many people in the refugee camp who grow up here are already gone to New Zealand, Finland and Australia. But me, I cannot.”

“Is it because of your rings; because you’re valuable?”
“Yes, I think because of my ring(s).”

Thai officials insist the women on the longer refugees.

“If you’re a refugee, you have to be in the refugee camp only. So that’s why once you choose not to stay in the refugee camp, your status as a refugee has been cancelled.”

In protest, Zember has now taken off her neck rings. She’s still getting used to the feeling.

“When I move, my neck is gonna follow something…”

Others here are starting to follow suit, but at the local school, plenty of young refugee girls are still wearing their first rings, raised in the traditional way for life as a tourist attraction.
