They look like perfectly ordinary twins, but they’ve helped scientists make the breakthrough, they could lead to a cure for the most common childhood cancer. Olivia developed leukaemia two years ago, but Isabella remained healthy. And because they’re identical, scientists could compare their blood to unravel the key early stages of the disease.

It’s made the processes easier for us, knowing that at the end of it, something positive will come out of it; er… knowing even when Isabella has to have her blood tested, and she is cried and not wanting to do it. We’ve insisted it because we thought will this can help in any way, another family, then it’s worth it.

The twins will be five next month, but when Olivia was diagnosed at age three, doctors tend to detective to find out why she got leukemia and her identical twin didn’t. Both girls have the same genetically abnormal pre-leukaemic cells in their bone marrow, as a result of a mutation that happened in their mother’s womb.

In Isabella, those cells layed dormant, but in Olivia, an unknown trigger possibly a childhood virus transformed them into abnormal stem cells. Olivia’s bone marrow released these aggressive cells into her blood, causing leukaemia.

Drugs for leukaemia are now so effective that around 90% of children survived. But doctors know that they’re over-treating some children and that the drugs they use are so toxic that a small number will actually die from the treatment itself. Now that doctors have these stem cells, they can monitor the disease and know precisely when to stop treatment.

If we can understand that we know the target, the enemy within which it really needs hits to cure this disease, then we can develop new treatments and this is taking us a long way forward towards that goal.

Olivia is now in remission, her family is looking forward to a healthy future. And the mysteries of leukaemia that she’s helped scientists solve will help generations of children to come.

They look like perfectly ordinary twins. But they will help scientists make the breakthrough that could lead to a cure for the most common childhood cancer.

Olivia developed Leukaemia two years ago but Lisabella remained healthy and because their identical scientists could compare their blood to unravel the key early stages of the desease.

It's made the process easier for us,knowing that at the end of it,something possitive will come out of it,knowing even when Lisabella has to have her blood test and she is cryed and not wanting to do it.we insist it because we thought well it just can help and in any way a number of family than its (?)

The twins will be five next month. when Oliver was diagnosied at age 3,doctors turned detective to find why she got Leukaemia and her identical twin didn't.Both girls have same genetically abnormal pre-Leukaemic cells in their bone marrow as a result of neutation that happened in their mother's womb.

In Lisabella those cells layed dormant but in Olivia an unknown trigger possiblly (atrield ?) virus transform them into abnormal stem cells.

Olivia's bone marrow release these aggresive cells into her blood, causing Leukaemia.
Drugs for Leukaemia are now so effective that around 90% children survive. but doctors know that overtreating some children and drugs they use are so toxic that small number would actually die from the treatment itself.

Now the doctors have these stem cells. They can monitor the desease and know precisely when to stop treatment.

If we can understand,we know the target, the enemy are there we really need a hit to kill the desease then we can develope a new treatment and this is taking a long way towards our goal.

Lisabella is now on a mission Her family is looking forward to a healthy future and misteries of Lisabella that she is helping scientists to solve will help generations of children to come.
