The British International Development minister Gareth Thomas said it was imperative that Burma’s Government allowed more aid in. “Our worry frankly is if we can’t get enough aid in and if we can’t get enough them trained humanitarian personnel on the ground too, that we risk the situation where there is further disaster with people dying because they cannot get access to water, they cannot get access to the basic medical equipment or the basic shelter, and the equipment is needed to survive on after the disaster.” Meanwhile, two senior campaigners for the Republican presidential candidate in the United States John McCain have resigned over links of the military government in Burma. One of them Douglas Goodyear runs a lobbying firm which has been paid to improve the image of the Burmese authorities.The other works for him. The Serbian President Boris Tadic has declared victory for his pro-western coalition in parliamentary elections widely seen as a referendum on the future of Serbia’s integration into the EU. According to preliminary official results, the coalition led by Mr. Taqic’s Democratic Party is well ahead, with more than 36 percent of the vote, followed b the Ultra Nationalist Serbian radical party, lagging 8 percent behind. However, its leader Tomislav Nikolic has disputed the presidency and insisted that his party is the only one able to form a legitimate government. “I see that everyone is holding news conferences. The Arab League has decided to send a delegation to Beirut to try to mediate an end to the worst sectarian fighting in Lebanon since a long running civil war ended 18 years ago. The delegation will include the League Secretary General Amr Moussa. Fighting between the Hezbollah Movement and pro-government gunmen erupted in Beirut last week and then spread to Lebanon’s second city Tripoli. Jeremy Bowen reports from Beirut. Varied deals and ceasefires have been discussed by the Lebanese, but they can’t do that on their own. The government is supported by the West and Saudi Arabia, Hezbollah by Syria and Iran.
