The Interior Ministry says after two rounds of voting they've won nearly 3/4 of the vote. Reformists took 16% and independent candidates just over 14%. From Tehran Pam O'Toole reports. This was expected another convincing victory for Iran's conservatives who've won almost 70% of the vote and strengthened their hold on the Iranian parliament. Reformists, many of whose candidates were disqualified in pre-election vetting and independents took their remainder of the parliamentary seats. But it's not all good news for Iran's hard-line President Mammoth Ahmadinejad. He's been under an increasing fire recently from both Reformists and fellow conservatives over his economic policies. This is Sandy Wash for the latest world news from the BBC Georgia has accused Russia of issuing a direct threat of an aggression after Moscow said it was ready to use military force if necessary to protect its citizens in the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The Georgian Foreign Ministry said such a move would represent a violation of international law. Matthew Collin has more. Georgia's breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been controlled by Russia-backed separatists since civil wars in the 1990s. Most people in both regions have been given Russian passports. Russia has peacekeeping troops in both breakaway regions but Georgia wants them to leave. The Georgian Foreign Ministary said Moscow was now involved in the conflict. Reports from East Timor say a rebel leader wanted for assassination attempts on the president and prime minister is meeting army representatives to negotiate his surrender. Gastao Salsinha has been on the run since the shooting of President Jose Ramos Horta in February. East Timor's attorney-general says no formal surrender has been agreed but Mr. Salsinha is no longer in hiding. North Korea has rejected a South Korean suggestion to set up liaison offices in each other's capitals to try to improve inter-Korea relations. The idea was put forward by the new South Korean President Lee Myung-bak earlier this month. North Korean state media described it as a "shallow tactic" aimed at evading South Korea's responsibility for worsening ties. A former political prisoner in the Maldives Mohammed Nasheed has stepped forward to challenge President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in what will be the Indian Ocean state's first ever multiparty presidential election. In a primary selection process the main opposition party chose Mr. Nasheed to be its candidate in the vote in October. He told the BBC that the country was changing and that he was confident that he could defeat President Gayoom. BBC world news 楼主
