The top 2 US officials in Iraq went before congressional committees Tuesday to give their impressions on the situation in the war-torn country and answering questions from among others, the 3 US presidential candidates. VOA’s Deborah Tate has more in this report from Capital Hill.

The televised senate hearing offer the president candidates a high profile setting to discuss their views on the Iraq war, which many Americans now oppose. Senator Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama who are battling for the Democratic Party nomination for president renew their calls for a gradual withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Senator Clinton made her comments said at senate armed services committee hearing.

“I think it’s time to begin an orderly process of withdrawing our troops, start rebuilding our military and focusing on the challenges posed by Afghanistan, the globe terrorist groups and other problems that confront America.”

Senator Obama speaking during a senate formed relation committee hearing later in the day said setting a timetable for a troop withdrawal would help increase the pressure on Iraqis to make necessary political compromises. “Nobody's asking for a precipitous withdrawal, but I do think that it has to be a measured but increased pressure” Obama also called for a surging diplomacy including talks with Iran, in an effort to stabilize Iraq. Iraqi government has imposed one day curfew on Baghdad for today. The 5th anniversary of the day US forces overtook the city. Officials say cars and motorcycles are banned from the streets from 5 in the morning to midnight local time.

On Tuesday radical Shiite cleric Moroco Sadr announced he was canceling anti-US demonstration in Baghdad planned for Wednesday out of concern his followers would be attacked. Iraqi cleric is also threatened to lift a 7- month-old ceasefire by his Mahdi army militia that has been credited with a sharp overall reduction in violence .

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday said Iran is installing 6,000 new centrifuges at uranium enrichment plant. The announcement drew sharply criticism from the United States and is expected to deepen the political rift between Iran and the West. For VOA, Aya Batrawy has more from our Middle-east Bureau in Cairo.

President Ahmadinejad announced that Teheran is expanding its nuclear enrichment programme at the Natanz’s nuclear plant by installing 6,000 new uranium enrichment centrifuges there. Speaking to a crowd near the nuclear power station in the city of Bushehr, Mahmoud Jafarai a plant official confirmed that Iran is moving ahead with nuclear enrichment. The Bushehr plant has been built by Russia but although the Uranium for the plant has been enriched in Russia. Jafarai told the crowd that Iran has reached an irreversible point in nuclear technology. And now western presser will only strengthen Iran and defending its national interest. The crowd responded with cheers, chanting “nuclear energy is our absolute right”. Iran says it hopes to install 5400 centrifuges at Natanz.

Elsewhere, San Francisco police are preparing for demonstrations during today’s Olympic torch relay, after chaotic protests during the London and Paris’s legs. Pro-Tibet originations say they have told activists to demonstrate peacefully and not to disrupt Wednesday’s torch journey. A spokesman for the Torch-relay committee in San Francisco said Tuesday one runner had dropped out. On Tuesday several hundred activists, Tuesday marched to express their concern about China’s crackdown in Tibet and other human rights issues.

Zimbabwe’s opposition accusing President Robert Mugabe of unleashing a campaign of violence. And he is appealing to African leaders to intervene and the country’s electoral standoff. The Secretary-general of the main opposition party Tendai Biti, on Tuesday said the government has army militias and as there has a completely militarization of the society since the elections were held March 29th. Zimbabwe’s Electoral Commission has yet to release any results from the presidential vote.
