A new scientific report says human activity is eliminating about 1% of all animal species each year. It reckons that more than one in four species have vanished in the past 35 years. Roger Harrabin reports.
The index is compiled by the Zoological Society of London along with wildlife group WWF. It tracks 1500 species. Among those hardest hit have been African antelopes, swordfish, hammerhead sharks, and baiji, the Yangtze River Dolphin. Next week sees a major meeting of the UN Convention on Biodiversity created to stabilize the loss of species.
The Zoological Society of London said governments have failed to put in place the policies needed to stop what it called one of the "great extinction episodes" in the history of the planet.

At least 50 are known to have died. 80% of the buildings in Wenchuan county were known collapsed. 5 thousand people died. The earthquake stroke just befor 2:30 this afternoon. The epicenter was in the mountainous Wenchuan county, Sichuan Province.

In the devastated town of Yingshu an army team said they could hear cries under the rubble of the collaspes building .The offical number of dead 12,000 is centain to rise with tens of thousands are still missing from Beijing Quntab Summeefield reports.
"China now are foucing on getting help to the very epicenter of the earthquake deep in the mountains of SiChuan .Rescue works overcame block roads and terriable weather conditions to reach Wen Chuan about 30 soilders made to YingShuo town and found most of the roads and all of the bridges destoried.,on the towns ten thousand of people only 2,300 are sort to survives.More help is arriving though supplies are been air liftted in the priorities are getting food and water to the surviors the military Commanders on the scene told State Television."
